Here is the latest Big 12 Conference sports news from The Associated Press – WDRB

UNDATED (AP) — NCAA officials have sent a letter to members updating them on enforcement’s staff pursuit of “potential violations” of the name, image and likeness compensation policy. The association emphasized the need for schools to aid investigations. The email says NCAA enforcement staff is “actively investigating potential abuses of NIL transactions and we’ll allege any substantiated concerns as soon as possible.” The NCAA in 2020 lifted its ban on athletes earning money for things like endorsement and sponsorship deals, social media posts and personal appearances.

UNDATED (AP) — Great players are spread around college football. You just don’t hear as much about some because they are on losing teams. Eight of the players on the 2021 Associated Press All-America first and second teams were on teams with losing records. Among the six AP preseason under-the-radar players last year, four became NFL draft picks. Here are six players going places in 2022, even if their teams aren’t: Arizona receiver Jacob Cowing, Louisiana Tech linebacker Tyler Grubbs, Kansas safety Kenny Logan Jr., Buffalo linebacker James Patterson, Northwestern offensive lineman Peter Skoronski and Syracuse running back Sean Tucker.

UNDATED (AP) — Highly touted blue-chip prospects often arrive on campus with fans’ expectations very high, almost to the point of unfairness. Some relish the pressure, and meet those expectations, and others bide their time and await their chance to shine. The player under the most scrutiny, perhaps, didn’t even go to a Power Five school. Travis Hunter instead picked Jackson State, where he plans to play cornerback and receiver for coach Deion Sanders. And Hunter welcomes the opportunity to show the skills that made him the top recruit in the country.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — College football players penalized for targeting now can have part of their punishment appealed under new NCAA rules. Players flagged for making an above-the-shoulder hit in the second half of a game must sit out the first half of the following game. This season the national coordinator of officials can take a second look at the call. If the call is determined to be made in error, the player will be allowed to play in the first half the next game. There also are new rules pertaining to players faking injuries to stop the clock and blocking below the waist.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Brent Venables has shown steady, early confidence as Oklahoma’s new head football coach. Those who work with him say that shouldn’t be a surprise. Retired coaches Bill Snyder of Kansas State and Bob Stoops of Oklahoma both say Venables has learned a lot in his years as an assistant. Venables most recently was defensive coordinator for national powerhouse Clemson. Now he takes over the Sooners. No. 9 Oklahoma hosts UTEP in the season opener next month.

UNDATED (AP) — Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams isn’t a typical transfer since he followed Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma and is playing for the same coach he had last year. But his status as a quarterback transfer isn’t unusual at all. No position has been impacted more by the NCAA rule changes allowing players to transfer without sitting out a season. The top two quarterbacks in the 2021 class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports already have left their original schools. Williams was ranked second. Quinn Ewers was ranked first and has transferred from Ohio State to Texas.
